What’s the Difference Between Sprains and Strains?

Sprains and strains are common injuries that can happen in the work place, on the field or court, or even just at home.  If you ever tried to define the difference between sprains and strains, you probably couldn’t tell the difference between the two.

There is a key difference between the two:

  • A sprain is an injury to a ligament due to stretching and or tearing
  • A strain is an injury to a muscle or a tendon

How do sprains and strains occur?

Sprains can occur in any age group and come from falling, twisting, lifting, or being involved in an accident.

What are the symptoms?

Some symptoms of sprains and strains include:

  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation
  • Cramping
  • Muscle spasm
  • Ripping of ligament, muscle, or tendon

How are they treated?

Treatment should start with the basic treatment using the RICE method: rest, ice, compression, and elevation.  Depending of the severity of the injury, you might want to have an x-ray performed to ensure the injury does not require surgery.

Digital X-Rays at AFC Urgent Care

For moments when your primary care physician is overbooked and you want to avoid the cost and wait time of the emergency room, AFC Urgent Care has board-certified physicians ready to see you without appointment.  If an x-ray is needed, we have an on-site digital x-ray system that can detect the root cause of your injury so that you may be diagnosed and treated correctly.
